Library 2.0: the Dark and the Light?

On one side of the room, we've got Sarah Clark's two posts on the "dark side" of Library 2.0:

The Dark Side of Library 2.0, Part 1: "It's the Patron, Stupid!"

The Dark Side of Library 2.0, Part 2: new bridges...new divides?

On the other side of the room, we've got Laura Cohen's rebuttal to Sarah's posts:

Is There a "Dark Side" to Library 2.0?

Laura's overall argument is that while Sarah raises some good points, her concerns really have nothing to do with Library 2.0.

Not to sound wishy-washy, but I think both of them make important points. In the end, I'm inclined to agree with Laura that the "dark side" Sarah's worried about isn't really a dark side to Library 2.0. But I'm eager to hear what other people think about this. Is there a "dark side" to L2.0? If there is, is it what Sarah's writing about?

  • Thanks for the mention! I've already posted a (way too long) response to Laura's post, but suffice it so say we agree on a lot more than which we disagree. I intend to do a "metapost" on some of the reactions I've gotten thus far, but I feel like whether or not I'm being too pessimistic (and I didn't realize i was being pessimistic! guess it was that eye-catching "dark side" title), it's an area where I think there needs to be more conversation, and my posts have succeeded in sparking said conversation. That's enough to make me happy. :-)

  • Obviously I agree with you, Sarah, that this subject needs more conversations. Reading your reply to Laura, I think I see what's going on. If I'm wrong, let me know.

There are some people who are very enthusiastic about the things they're interested in. I'm one of them (as my wife continually reminds me). If there's something I feel strongly about, I can't help but talk about it passionately and enthusiastically.

I sometimes get the impression that some of my coworkers get kind of put-off by my enthusiasm. Maybe they think I'm trying to shove something down their throats. (I'm not.) Maybe they think I consider myself smarter or more hip than they are. (I don't.) It's easy for some people to equate enthusiasm with fanaticism. When people get enthusiastic about new technology, it's easy to think that the technology is all they're excited and passionate about.

I'm I anywhere in the neighborhood here?

  • I think that Sarah's posts, both of them are valid, but I agree they may not have as much to do with Library 2.0 as they do with the experience of working in Libraries in 2007. I must confess, it seems that lately, if you want anyone to pay attention to what you are blogging about you have to put "library 2.0" into it somewhere. (does that sound a bit jaded?) I'm glad that Sarah got some extra traffic to her blog though. There are loads of bloggers out there who are writing really good stuff about Libraryland but it seems that precious few are getting much traffic nor the attention they deserve.

I experience many of the same issues in a public library setting as Sarah describes in part 2. And like Sarah, my roots are humble as well, my parents did not attend college, but here I am with a MLIS and one of my 4 siblings also has a masters degree. And yes, the path out is Education.

On to what Joshua said, I also feel like some people think I'm this crazy geek and wish I would shut the hell up about Library 2.0, "the Third Place", wikis and blogs.

Happily, we have started a Learning 2.0 program at MPOW (with Helene's blessing) and now more and more people are coming up to me and actually thanking me for pointing this stuff out. WOW?!
